Committee Meeting 5:08pm AGM 6pm

Present: Caroline Weatherstone, Jane Power, Richard Fairweather, Jinny Frahn, Lauren Davis, Pat Bilney, Amanda Crossley, Paul Jelfs, Lorraine Felix

Apologies: Nil

Welcome:  Keith Wells

Brief discussion prior to AGM:

  • How to get the Yankalilla residents more involved in the community – a challenge for the next committee who will find new ways to engage with the people, focusing on listening to their needs and being a voice for the community and hoping to get a younger generation involved.
  • YDRA is not a progress association but a group who gathers information about what’s going on in the district on a broader scale. We focus on drawing attention to what is in the council agenda/minutes, along with supporting community driven projects.
  • Q&A events have been successful and will be continued, inviting local political members/candidates – possible Q&A prior to election, candidates to be contacted regarding availability.
  • Welcome Keith Wells, a local resident, bringing ideas of developing connection between community and council, with all local associations having a common goal of being a voice for the community.
  • Invite councillors to YDRA meetings
  • Next committee meeting time to be decided by the new committee, suggested Tuesdays after council meetings.

AGM

We acknowledge the three major clans that lay claim to this land we now call the Fleurieu – the Kaurna, Ramindjeri and Ngarrindjeri people. We pay our respects to elders past, present and emerging, we respect their spiritual beliefs and connections to their land. We acknowledge the important role that first nations people continue to play within our shared community.

All elected Council members were invited to the AGM for informal discussions and to build connections with the community.

Elected Members Present:  Tim Moffat, Davina Quirke, Karin Hatch, Wayne Gibbs

Dog Park Presentation – Lorraine Felix

Please see our website for full presentation – in brief summary:

  • After public consultation, DCY has agreed to commence further discussion with relevant groups and authorities in relation to the proposed dog park at the lower level of Bungala Reserve, close to Hay Flat Rd.
  • Any costs related to the establishment and maintenance of the dog park will not be at a cost to the council or rate payers but will be borne by the Dog Park Committee.
  • The park will become a council asset, with a friends group providing the ongoing maintenance
  • Once a written agreement is made with council, we will be able to apply for grants

President Address – Caroline Weatherstone

Our aim is to strengthen the relationship between the community and the council in regard to progress and initiatives, as an association we have a stronger voice and can act on behalf of individuals.

YDRA was incorporated on 25 Nov 2019, for the purpose to preserve the natural environment, built environment, social cohesion, including respect for the traditional aboriginal owners and to support community sustainability.

We have achieved a lot during this time; however, we are only as strong as the strength of our membership – please consider joining us for a low cost of $15 per year – we are a non-partisan organization.

Call to the floor for nominations for the 2025 YDRA committee:

President: we have had one nomination, Amanda Crossley, are there any other nominations? No other nominations – Amanda Grossley accepted the position

Secretary: we have had one nomination, Lorraine Felix, are there any other nominations? No other nominations – Lorraine Felix accepted position

Treasurer: we have had one nomination, Richard Fairweather, are there any other nominations? No other nominations – Richard Fairweather accepted position

General Committee Members:  Paul Jelfs, Keith Wells, Caroline Weatherstone, Jane Power, Virginia Frahn.

Thank you to Caroline for doing a very tough job over the past years.

The meeting was handed over to the floor for a general and casual discussion between elected members and the community. All councillor opinions are not the view of the Yankalilla Council, but their own thoughts. Discussions included:

  • Councillor consensus YDRA is approachable and helpful
  • Council financial position – no money for any ‘extras’, ideas discussed for savings, wages, staff levels, KPI’s, getting back to basics – roads, rubbish and library. The community needs to know what services the council funds and what services they would be willing to forfeit. More Lobbying of state and federal government to fund broader activities such as environmental care and main tourist routes.
  • Rates discussed, how they are currently calculated and if we could do something different. Need to get on top of debt without increasing rates being the only solution. The community is at its limit with being able to afford any more rises. Suggested cost cutting on services, find savings somewhere. Levy on top of rates discussed, not a popular solution, especially if the community can’t see the council making similar sacrifices.
  • Footpath access currently dangerous and needs to be addressed. YDRA has pursued this in the past and hope a sub-committee can be organised to focus on this. One big safety problem raised, which appears to be a quick solution, is overgrown property hedges.
    • YDRA agreed to write a letter to council to see if the outside staff could hedge dangerous sections or ask property owners to maintain them.
  • More residents and all elected members to be encouraged to participate regularly in forums organised by community groups to promote open communication and a greater understanding on decision-making processes.

Meeting Closed: 7:26 – Next meeting to be decided by new committee
